Heatwave: How to cope in hot weather
Dear Albany Practice Patients,
As we enjoy the warmer days of summer, we at The Albany Practice want to ensure you and your loved ones stay safe and well during the heat. High temperatures can pose health risks, especially for older adults, young children, and those with long-term health conditions.
Here are some simple but important tips to help you cope during hot weather:
🌡️ Stay Cool Indoors
Keep your home cool by closing curtains on windows that face the sun.
Open windows at night when it’s cooler to let fresh air in.
Use electric fans if the temperature is below 35°C.
🧊 Keep Yourself Cool
Drink plenty of fluids – water is best. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks.
Eat cold meals like salads and fruit.
Take cool showers or splash yourself with water throughout the day.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes and a wide-brimmed hat if going outside.
☀️ Avoid the Heat
Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, when it’s hottest.
If you must go out, walk in the shade, wear sunscreen, and take water with you.
Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.
👶👵 Look Out for Others
Check in on elderly neighbours, relatives, or anyone living alone.
Never leave children, older people, or pets in parked cars.
Be aware of signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, and a fast pulse. If symptoms worsen, seek medical help.
